Fourteen years ago, high school track star Sydney Adams was gunned down in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. The investigation yielded useless clues, and the case went cold. But homicide detective Augustus Knox never gave up on finding Sydney’s killer. Now, retired from the police force and with only months to live, he enlists the help of private investigator Jocelyn Rush to clear the case once and for all.
Armed with little more than a theory as to who murdered Sydney, Jocelyn tries to lure a killer into the open. But unraveling the mystery means facing off against a cunning psychopath whose ruthlessness knows no bounds. When more bodies start to pile up, Jocelyn has to decide just how far she’s willing to go to catch a cold-blooded killer.
A Sneak Peek inside…
Cash waited until the door closed behind her before stepping toward Jocelyn. Her heart rate ticked up a beat. She made a conscious effort not to back away from him. She’d killed more formidable foes than him, she reminded herself. Plus Inez, Anita, and Trent were right inside.
“How could you do that?” he asked.
Jocelyn kept her face blank. She stood perfectly still. Calm. “I’m sorry?”
He paced before her, gesturing wildly toward the restaurant. “The photo,” he spat. “My wife is here with me. My wife!”
“Mr. Rigo, I’m not sure I understand what’s going on here.”
He threw his arms in the air, still pacing rapidly. He glanced behind her as if to make sure Francine wasn’t approaching. “My wife,” he said. “She doesn’t know. Sydney and I—we—” He broke off.
“Your wife doesn’t know what, Mr. Rigo?”
He froze and looked down at the ground as if considering something. When he looked back up at her, he seemed calmer somehow.
“You’re not with the police, right? I mean I know the police are here. Don’t try lying. I saw that man back there by the bathrooms. He’s a detective, I bet. Here from the police. But you, you’re not with the police, right?”
“I’m a private investigator,” Jocelyn answered.
He drew closer, his voice quieter. “If I tell you something, you can’t—you can’t, like, do anything about it, right?”
“I’m not a priest, Mr. Rigo.”
So what did I think?
This is a great read! If you’re looking for a gritty suspense, mixed up with a little mystery, a dash of romance and a lot of intrigue then this is a great read!
Jocelyn has been to hell and back already, having survived an attack by a former suspect during her time as a detective with the Philadelphia PD, she’s determined to have a job that brings her home to her daughter at night. But when a cold case lands at her feet from the hands of a discredited retired detective, she finds herself involved being dragged deeper and deeper into the dangerous world she’s just escaped from.
It’s been a while since I read romantic suspence because I can normally spot the bad guy from page one. But not with Cold Blooded. It’s a plot filled with unexpected twists and turns and just when you think you’ve figured it out, you’re wrong! Sadly, I did figure out the bad guy, quite early on, however I did not pick up on just how sadistic this psychopath is so when the plot twists kept coming, I had to keep on reading. This is a baddie that makes me shudder!
It’s a great read, with a great cast of characters. I will warn you though, this is written from multiple characters points of view, which is something I don’t normally enjoy, but on this occassion, Regan set up the characters extremely well from the outset so switching between them was very easy to follow.
