Raised by a single mother in London, Anna Harris was surprised to find out her father was the business mogul, Oliver Bolles. Deciding to follow in his footsteps, she used her brilliant ability with numbers to secure a sought after position in a London brokerage house. Disillusioned by the lack of integrity, Anna decides to seek a more fulfilling career and unknowingly throws herself into the path of an old obsession, Alistair Martin. Finding it difficult to endure the emotional scars of being abandoned by her father and then taken advantage of by a devious boyfriend, Anna avoids serious relationships until she is challenged to do something she has never done.
Alistair Martin is a hot, obscenely wealthy vineyard owner with a razor sharp business mind who pursues Anna out of curiosity and decides to invest into her failing events management company. He was raised in poverty until he was a teenager and his father’s family brought him into the fold. Anna is not what he expects and he has to change his game plan if he hopes to convince the secret heiress to let down her guard enough to leap into a wild affair.
A Sneak Peek Inside….
Anna Bolles wanted a different life. She was tired of entertaining clients who drank too much and lived to party. She had worked extraordinarily hard for the company over the past two years but with each passing day she became more unfulfilled. Being one of the only women, even with the Bolles name to protect her, made her a target.
She nodded to the security officer and walked out the front revolving door and headed down the busy London sidewalk. It was the beginning of rush hour and professionals were getting off work.
Awkwardly carrying the cardboard box in the busy rush hour crowd, announced to absolute strangers that she had either been fired or had given notice. Anna made her way over to a trash receptacle and looking into the box, removed an antique letter opener, a pair of sunglasses, a silk scarf and a few favorite pens and tucked them into her handbag. She tossed the remaining items into the trash and then took apart the box and placed it in a recycle bin. She wanted to escape the spotlight. She should be celebrating; she had narrowly escaped a life destined to be overly competitive, at times morally bankrupt, and seen by most as a mindless rat race.
Within a few short blocks, she walked into her apartment building. Taking the elevator to the 12th floor, she opened the door to her luxurious flat. The furnishings were mostly white on white with an occasional splash of pink. She was going to miss this place if she were being honest. She had decorated it herself and it was her first real venture into adulthood.
There were open boxes everywhere. The movers were coming Sunday to put most of her furniture in storage. She had found a cheap studio apartment in an old area of London. She would need to conserve every pound if she was going to be self-sufficient and be able to live on the small salary from the start-up.
She walked into the bedroom and stripped off her work clothes. She opted for a pair of low cut jeans and a button down white cotton shirt. She pulled on black boots and put her blond hair up into French twist.
She had promised to meet a few of her co-workers for a celebratory drink. She needed closure. Most of them would think her decision to leave was foolish. Afterwards, she would drop by her mother’s house to share the news before someone else told her.
So what did I think…?
Anna is a woman who’s living her life according to everyone else’s expectations, but she about to make some big changes in her life. She sells her exclusive London apartment, quits her high powered-high pressured job and heads to work for a struggling small start-up event management company. Trying to gain the obtain the crucial investment to make the event management company a success throws her into the path of Alistair Martin; the guy she once made an immature pass at many years before.
Alistair has taken his place as the head of his family’s successful English Winery and but he’s also branched out on his own to build a successful Mircobrewery. He’s curious about why his best friend’s sister-in-law seems to have made a foolish decision to abandon her current lifestyle. She’s reputed to be beyond gifted with numbers and a raising star in the financial world. But its more than that. His fascinated by the grown up woman, who he would have took advantage of as a teen, if he hadn’t learned who she was and how old she was at the time. So he challenges Anna and her new company to manage the launch of his latest wine. And himself, when Anna puts a ‘keeping hands to himself’ rule on their relationship, despite the chemistry that still exists between them.
So what did I think? Well, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I thought I would. But in saying that, both Anna and Alistair were fully rounded characters, with conflicts and troubles galore. I was drawn into them and their journey and I’d have liked to see more of Alistair than the occasional glimpses of him. As I picked up this series at book two, its was easy to read and made me want to read the first in the series to find out more about the back story in Anna’s story.
Anna and Alistair’s journey to HEA was littered with issues and conflicts, from Alistair’s need to be free to Anna’s Daddy issues that lead to the fatality of the relationship. They need to resolve their issues before they can work as one as a couple, which I was happy to see in the end.
If you enjoy sweet stories, twisted with a dark back story, and with an added touch of spice, you’ll enjoy The Secret Heiress.
